You have an idea for a book - a really freaking good one. You've started writing it and planning and dreaming, but you have no earthly idea what to do next. You need a book doctor. I volunteer as tribute!
I've sold several books of various genres on proposal and the process is never as easy as people think it is. Putting together a kickass book proposal isn't just a matter of having a great elevator pitch, an outline, and a few sample chapters. Editors are looking for evidence. They need proof that you can deliver the goods. When an editor takes a book to an acquisitions meeting, they have to convince everyone there that your book is going to be killer. And the only way they can do that is with a proposal that rocks their socks off. This includes 50-100 pages of perfect writing that hooks the reader from the first line. It includes a detailed outline, a gorgeously written synopsis that makes their hearts beat faster, and a query letter that reads like the beginning of a great review in the New York Times. They need to know you can pull this off, but, more importantly, you need to know you can pull this off.
The work we'll be doing together will be going deep into your story planning. I'll be reading and re-reading your first 50-100 pages to make sure they're working on all levels. We'll be developing your outline and checking it for every possible flaw. We'll be working on your synopsis and query letter, putting together comp titles, working on the pitch. This is A LOT of work, but it's good work and it will set you up really well to sell the book and finish it.
Another benefit of this work is that you might think the book is ready--and then realize you have to go back to the drawing board. That's okay! I'll be right there with you and we will re-work this book idea of yours until it sings. That's part of why I chose the quote to your left--we going to carve the raw material you've got until we find that angel in the stone, that story in the sea of ink. No way out but through, my friend. We'll carve until we find the book that wants to be written. This process takes about 6-8 weeks.
